Agree to Disagree

Dan and I are working our way through a study by John and Stasi Eldredge titled “Love and War: Find your way to something beautiful in your Marriage.”

I love it when God shows me a basic truth in a way that I can truly grasp. John and Stasi share how easily the devil can step into your marriage – find a small crevice and wedge thoughts and feelings into that small space.

Then we tend to hear those negative thoughts and feelings and we find ourselves agreeing with those thoughts. Let me give you a brief example and then you can think on this a bit and see if this is an area where the devil has been working in your marriage.

You and your spouse wake up and the day is brimming with possibilities. The sun is shining and birds are singing. The coffee is perfect. Then your spouse stumbles through the kitchen and goes straight to their phone – without any acknowledgement of you. The first thought that may cross your mind goes something like this: “he never says ‘good morning’ to me – what a jerk!”

Then our brains start to ponder that thought and we start agreeing with that thought. “Yeah, he really is a jerk – he doesn’t care about me – he is only interested in who liked his last Facebook post!”

Then we have the “always” and “never” statements that run rampant through our minds such as … “she always makes me late for work,” or “he never does anything around the house without me asking.”

These are the beginning of the agreements that the devil enjoys placing on our mental paths.

Matthew 4:10 says, “Jesus said to him, “be gone, Satan! For it is written, ‘You shall worship the Lord your God and Him only shall you serve.”

When we start agreeing with the statements Satan plants in our heads that is the opportunity that Satan is looking for to get us to agree and entertain the negative thoughts about our spouses, our marriages, our families … and even ourselves.

I am disappointed at how many times I have agreed with Satan about myself. For example, I have heard in my head these statements …”you will never be thin enough; you can’t sing well enough; you are too shy to do that; who are you to think you could be a speaker and writer and help other people in their marriages?” Can you relate? How many times have similar thoughts run through your head?

It’s time to agree to disagree!

These negative thoughts are easily planted by a master manipulator. We were created to be more than conquerors! I believe that battle starts in our minds – our thoughts.

Second Corinthians 10:5 says, “We destroy arguments and every lofty opinion raised against the knowledge of God, and take every thought captive to obey Christ.”

We were created for victory in Christ. Take every thought back to God and ask Him to reveal His truth to you. You are loved. You have talents and gifts. You are good enough. You can do this.

Blessings in Your Blending!
