Bread and Fish

Take a moment to picture this scene: Jesus has been on a hillside teaching thousands of people for most of the day. It is getting late and everyone is getting hungry. Jesus’s disciples are worried about what they will feed all these people. One disciple told Jesus that a little boy had five small loaves of bread and two small fish – but that would not go very far at all. Jesus takes this meager basket of food and gives thanks to God for the provision. What happens next is astonishing.

The disciples take the blessed food and start passing it out – remember there were only five small loaves and two fish – to over 5,000 men plus the women and children that were there as well. The food never ran out… In fact, there were twelve baskets of food left over after everyone ate and was satisfied.

As a step mom, you may be looking around and only seeing the need of your blended family being too big for you to provide for adequately. I’m going to suggest that you take whatever gifts you have been given – whatever provision you have, and ask God to bless that and then start passing out that gift and provision.

In other words, if you are a very patient person, let that overflow into your family. Show this family what it looks like to love even though there are tough trials all around and some family members are just testy to the core.

If you are a person that has been gifted with a talent for cooking or baking, then ask God to bless that gift and use it to sweeten the socks off your family. I think you get the picture.

In my blended family, Dan and his children found commitment, loyalty, and faithfulness in me. Those happen to be some of my gifts. I used the gifts to steadily show them I was gonna stay and gonna stick. I asked God to take what I had and use it to bless this family and God has been faithful to do just that!

Pray about what God has gifted you with. No matter how big or small the gifts are, lift them up to God and ask Him to bless them. He can turn your small basket into a portion that will cover your entire family – and then still have so much left over!

Ephesians 3:20-21 says, “Now to Him who is able to do immeasurably more than all we ask or imagine, according to His power that is at work within us, to Him be glory in the church and in Christ Jesus throughout all generations, for ever and ever! Amen.

Blessings in your Blending!
